President Donald Trump has nominated U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security, placing a Native American lawmaker in line to lead one of the federal government’s most influential national security agencies.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin would oversee the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which manages border security, immigration enforcement, disaster response, and critical infrastructure protection. DHS includes agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Mullin is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and currently represents Oklahoma in the United States Senate.
Background and Political Career
Before serving in the Senate, Mullin represented Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2023. He was elected to the Senate in 2022, succeeding longtime Senator Jim Inhofe.
Prior to entering politics, Mullin worked in the plumbing and home services industry and operated a family-owned business. His career in Congress has included work on issues such as infrastructure development, energy policy, national security, and small business regulation.
Mullin is one of a small number of Native Americans serving in the United States Senate and is among the highest-ranking elected officials in the country who are citizens of a federally recognized tribe.
Role of the Department of Homeland Security
The Department of Homeland Security is one of the largest federal agencies. It was created in 2002 following the September 11 attacks to coordinate national security efforts across multiple federal functions.
The department is responsible for:
-
Border and immigration enforcement
-
Disaster response through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
-
Transportation security through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
-
Cybersecurity and infrastructure protection
-
Immigration processing and citizenship services
The Secretary of Homeland Security plays a central role in shaping national policy on immigration and border security.
What Comes Next
Mullin’s nomination must be confirmed by the United States Senate before he can assume the position. The confirmation process will include hearings before the relevant Senate committees and a final confirmation vote.
If confirmed, Mullin would join the president’s cabinet and become one of the most senior Native American officials in the federal executive branch.
