Tunica-Biloxi, Louisiana ,By Liz Hill (OJIBWE)

For the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, the 21st century has ushered in a renaissance of its proud Native heritage and traditions that go back millennie in the southeastern United States. Almost obliterated by disease, warfare and other catastrophic events of the 18th through 20th centuries, like many of the Native tribes of teh Southeast, thses proud people have risen from thelowly place where they had been downtrodden to a position that reflects their long history among the original inhabitants of the Americas.

A recent Time magazine article pointed out that Native American gaming pulled in $12.7 billion in revenues in 2001. The article noted that those kind of figures place overall Indian gaming among Fortune magazine's 20 most profitable corporations. Those type of earnings exceed the combined holdings of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Merrill Lynch, American Express and Lehman Brothers!
